Zara (Zadar) is a city in Croatia on the Adriatic Sea.
The Zara enclave was organized into an Italian province.
After the invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia by Axis powers, the city became the center of a new Italian territorial entity, called "Governatorato della Dalmazia", including the provinces of Zara, Spalato and Cattaro.
After the Italian surrender on September 8, 1943, the territory was occupied by Germans.
In 1944 Zara was occupied by partisans.
Formally, the city remained under Italian sovereignty until February 10, 1947.
